The third issue of NEST’s newsletter Veritas (Latin for truth) is now available for download in PDF format – simply click here. Volume 3 Issue 1 is a special issue pulling together the cluster of articles written by faculty members of The New England School of Theology on the contemporary issue of the Return of Christ and the predictions of Harold Camping. It was originally broadcast by e-mail on May 19 but the articles it contains all date from earlier in the month.
NEST has made the conscious decision to engage the issue of Harold Camping, Family Radio, and the prediction that Judgment Day would be May 21, 2011. Not everyone would agree with this decision. Our esteemed friends at The Gospel Coalition, for example, made the well-considered decision not to give the prediction any more publicity. For our part, however, we recognize that there is enormous interest already and there may be compelling positive reasons to engage the issue publicly. These include:
- to get on record that many Christians disagree with Camping’s claim (and why)
- to make use of what may be “a teachable moment” for many people (Christians and non-Christians alike)
- to show that good theology is not esoteric or arcane, but has direct and vital relevance to the issues of the day
Special thanks to John DeMassa for the work on putting this issue together. For reference, the following articles are included in the volume:
Ray Pennoyer, Harold Camping’s Judgment Day (May 6)
Chip Anderson, Sunday Musing: End-time date-setting distracts the church (May 15)
