Loving God’s Word is easy, working on it is hard (New Testament Greek Begins)

Falling in love with the Word of God is easy.  Maintaining a relationship with the Word of God takes time and effort, just like any relationship.  In 1524, one of the fathers of Church reformation, Martin Luther, said with a passion often lacking today, Continue reading

John Stott has finished the race

John R.W. Stott, one time rector of All Souls Church in London, finished his earthly race yesterday, July 27, at the age of 90 and leaves a considerable legacy behind him. Accolades and reminiscences have already started to appear from around the world, many written by people in a better position to speak than I am.

For me, John Stott was an example of evangelicalism the way it should be: Bible-trusting and Christ-centered, conversant with and open to the best of modern scholarship, confident in issues that are central to the faith and generous in those that are not, passionate for the glory of Christ and displaying little interest in parochial squabbles. Above all else he held forth the historic gospel of Jesus Christ with great clarity and was determined to see that gospel passed on to the next generation.

While I was studying at Gordon-Conwell, Rev. Stott came and delivered a series of lectures to the seminarians on preaching, lectures based on his (then) new book Between Two Worlds. Not only his words, but his entire presence was refreshing – a reminder that what God was doing here in the USA, in this particular corner of New England, was part of something much, much larger. He now joins those who have finished the race (2 Timothy 4:7-8), having passed on the baton to those of us who are left behind – something that will happen again and again until the Lord’s return. Let’s be sure to run our leg well, and exchange the baton with care to those following us.

Rob Bell had a major hand in this with his controversial book Love Wins (HarperOne, March 2011), spurring on as it did a thousand rejoinders including a new book-length treatment by Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle called Erasing Hell (David C. Cook, July 2011) and even a short piece in the NEST Blog. While the discussion has sometimes produced more heat than light, it is certainly a topic worth examining afresh in light of biblical revelation.

The issue I will take up here is a very specific one: How should Christians feel about hell and final judgment? In other words, given the reality of hell and divine judgment as revealed in Scripture, should Christians not only acknowledge the truthfulness of these doctrines but go beyond that and learn to embrace them with passion and even love?

Chrislam?

What would you do if your pastor preached a sermon including teachings from the Koran?

According to a recent report, a number of mainline Protestant Churches may have shared passages from the Koran this past Sunday.

The same report details a number of well known evangelical leaders who signed a declaration recognizing ‘Allah’ and ‘Yahweh’ are the same God (some are pictured).

Do Miracles Prove the Existence of God?

I recently had a thought-provoking conversation with a good friend in which he questioned whether miracles (including biblical miracles) actually prove the existence of God. This led me to formulate the following thesis: Biblical miracles are never directed at the simple philosophical question, “Is there a God?” but rather they tell us something about the God who exists. In other words, biblical miracles are not God’s way of saying, “Look, I exist!” but rather, “See, this is who I am.”

Take the two defining miracles in the Bible: In the Old Testament, it is the parting of the Red Sea and the associated events rescuing the people of Israel out of Egypt. In the New Testament, it is the resurrection of Jesus. Continue reading
